Patients with episodes where they struggle to adequately breath during sleep might suffer from what is referred to as obstructive sleep apnea.
This is usually diagnosed by means of specialised sleep studies which will also aid in determining the severity.
The first line treatment for patients suffering from obstructive sleep apnea is by using sleep assist devices commonly referred to as CPAP machines. The majority of patients find these machines to be very helpful, however some patients struggle to tolerate them or have obvious anatomical deformities for which surgery might be of benefit.
The movement of jaws into a new position that helps to “open” the airway has a well proven track record to decrease the severity or provide a cure to patients suffering from obstructive sleep apnea.
