Facial trauma refer to injuries to the face that are commonly caused by motor vehicle accidents, falls, sport injuries or interpersonal violence. The incidences can cause soft tissue injuries (lacerations/cuts) or fractures of the facial bones.
Depending on the location and the severity of the impact, numerous deficits can be acquired such as the loss of teeth, the inability to chew or bite properly, cosmetic defects, injury to nerves, visual disturbances, facial asymmetry etc.
Depending on the severity of the displacement of the bones, it might be necessary to surgically open the fractures, realign the bones and fixate them by means of small plates and screws to restore the preinjury form and function.
